The London Lakers are pleased to announce the signing of Allen, Texas native Rio Virgoe.

Virgoe, a1997 born goaltender spent the 2014-2015 playing Junior A hockey with the Rochester Icehawks of the MnJHL.

One year removed from helping his HC Dallas U18 team reach the USA Hockey Nationals, Virgoe, who stands six-foot-four, collected a sparkling 0.88 GAA and 0.945 save percentage with Rochester last season.

“I’m really excited to play in London, Ontario this season. It’s a honor to be able to play in Canada,” says Virgoe of his signing.

“Rio is a big, athletic netminder,” says London Lakers Director of Player Personnel and Scouting Ian Kennedy.

“His size puts him up there with most professional goaltenders. We feel that Rio can develop into an elite Junior hockey netminder, and fulfill his goals of playing at a higher level.”

According to head coach Jeff Zehr, he’s excited to get the big netminder to London.

“Rio is coming to London to work hard and improve his game,” says Zehr of Virgoe, who will also be working with Lakers goaltending coach Doug Rome this season. “Rio will earn everything that he gets this year, and we are more than excited to work with this outstanding young monster of a man.”

Zehr’s mindset toward Virgoe fits the London Lakers philosophy of development.

“We’ve said all along, we’re about developing kids as individuals as well as hockey players. It is not our goal to hold on to players for more than one season. We want to bring kids out and prepare them for their next step,” added Zehr.
