BURLINGTON–After narrowly missing out on a GMHL Championship appearance, the Halton Ravens have sent their two most prolific scorers on to the NCAA, together.
Forwards Shane Bennett and Spencer Gourlay have announced their commitments to play NCAA hockey for the coming season. Both players will attend Cortland University and play for the Cortland Red Dragons men’s hockey team.
“This is a credit to the hard work of these two players and to our entire organization,” said Head Coach/GM Dane O’Neill. “Shane and Spencer have very different styles of play, but their on-ice chemistry is undeniable and they will be a tough duo for Cortland.”
Gourlay, a former Sutherland Cup Champion with the Caledonia Corvairs, posted 108 points this past season as the Ravens team captain. He brings toughness and superior leadership to go along with his prolific scoring.
Bennett, joined the Ravens after a decorated OJHL career, a key mid-season addition for the Ravens. Despite playing only 30 games, Shane also notched 108 points by pairing elite speed and shot accuracy with unrivaled intensity to earn the league’s MVP award.
The tandem gained notoriety at the GMHL’s annual NCAA/CIS Showcase weekend, generating more interest as the event progressed, eventually earning a number of offers over the following months.
“It was an excellent opportunity and they made the most of it,” said team Owner Mark Hetherman. “At one point there were representatives from three different teams all trying to get to Shane and Spencer following their game versus the Parry Sound Islanders. They combined to score six goals. It was an amazing performance in front of a big crowd of scouts.”
It was only over the past month that the players started speaking about accepting offers that would allow them to continue playing together at the NCAA level.
Halton continues looking for their next crop of players for the 2015/16 season. Their next try-out skates will take place on July 27th and 29th. Contact Dane O’Neill to reserve a spot: firstname.lastname@example.org
